TWRA TO CHARGE FOR PRIVATE POND FISH STOCKING

Beginning October 1, 2001, individuals requesting bass and bluegill from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency for stocking their private ponds will be required to pay a fee of $100 per acre.

The fee will not affect applications currently on file with the agency, and only largemouth bass and bluegill will be provided for stocking.

A special legislative committee working on TWRA fiscal affairs passed legislation last year authorizing the agency to charge for certain programs.

This was part of an effort by the agency to fairly assess costs to those who benefit from various TWRA programs.  Among those were the Private Pond Fish Stocking Program, the Commercial Fishing Program and the Commercial Musseling Program.

Previously, the TWRA provided fish at no charge to anyone having a pond that met certain requirements.

The entire stocking program was evaluated to determine agency costs and to assess the fee needed to defray expenses for stocking fish in private ponds.

The $100 per acre fee was determined to be the average cost to the agency for raising, transporting, and distributing private pond fish, along with other associated costs.

This fee is pro-rated.  For example, stocking a half-acre pond would cost $50.

For more information about the Pond Stocking Program or to request a Pond Fish Stocking Application, contact your local TWRA office.
