Proper Pond Management

Anyone who has tried to maintain good fishing in their pond or who has tried to establish a new pond, has dealt with a lot of tricky questions. Maintaining proper balance is not something that happens on it's own.

When building a new pond or restocking there are three or four fish that the TWRA recommends: Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Catfish and sometimes redear sunfish. Keeping the fishing at an optimal level involves proper harvesting of these fish as well as maintaining the water quality.

Luckily the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has provided an online pamphlet that covers almost every imaginable question.

The pamphlet has over 50 pages of information and covers:
 How to stock fish
 Fertilizing
 Maintaining Proper Fish Balance
 Identifying and controlling Noxious Weeds
 Pond building procedures
 ...and many other questions.

You can view the online pamphlet...here.

Note: this file is in adobe acrobat format. To view it, you must have acrobat reader installed. If you don't have it installed, you can get it free here...acrobat reader.

Or you can call the Region I TWRA Office to order this pamphlet at 1-800372-3928.
