Reelfoot Lake Duck Hunting
Duck season is almost here and we have already been seeing some birds
migrating to Reelfoot Lake.
It is definitely shaping up to be a good opener and there may be a
couple factors to help us all rebound from the past couple of years of
taking below normal numbers of waterfowl along the entire Mississippi
River Flyway.
The Canadian Border has been closed due to the Corona Virus and that
does nothing but help us here in the states. I personally know many
hunters that did not get to take a waterfowl hunting trip to Canada this
year and if we take into account what normally gets harvested and
“educated” in the months of September and October out of the equation we
are left with more birds (less educated) than we would have otherwise.
The biggest
contribution to a more promising and successful season along the
Mississippi River Flyway. That factor is the current and future river
levels. These birds are called “waterfowl’ for a reason and the key word
is “water.” The past 2 years we have had a huge river before the season
even started. The more surface area of water ducks and geese have
results in birds being scattered and not as concentrated anywhere in
particular.
